Wearables turned heart rate variability into a daily grade. That is both useful and dangerous. Useful because HRV can reveal stress before you admit it. Dangerous because a noisy metric can become one more thing to worry about.
HRV is best treated as a weather report, not a commandment.
What HRV measures
Your heart does not beat like a metronome. The tiny variation between beats is shaped partly by the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system. In many contexts, higher HRV suggests better recovery and flexibility in the system, while lower HRV can reflect strain.
Why single scores mislead
Hydration, alcohol, sleep timing, illness, menstrual cycle phase, travel, emotional stress, and measurement conditions can all shift HRV. Different devices use different algorithms. A low score after a hard workout may be exactly what you would expect, not a crisis.
Use trends, not fear
The question is not what your HRV is today. The question is what story it keeps telling.
If HRV is suppressed for several days alongside poor sleep, heavy legs, irritability, and worse performance, it may be time to reduce training load. If it bounces around but you feel fine, the number may simply be noise.
What improves the signal
- Measure consistently at the same time and under similar conditions.
- Compare against your baseline, not someone else online.
- Pair the number with symptoms: sleep, soreness, mood, appetite, performance.
- Use it to adjust gently, not to cancel life.
HRV is a useful nudge toward the basics: sleep, sensible training, less alcohol, more easy movement, and enough recovery. It is not a substitute for listening to the body it is measuring.
