How to rebuild it
If attention is trainable, the path back is practice plus a friendlier environment. Both matter; willpower alone loses.

Wandering isn't failure; noticing and returning is the rep. This is the same mechanism that makes focused meditation strengthen attention.
- Add friction to distraction. Put the phone in another room, not face-down beside you. The goal is to make the easy reach slightly harder. Small friction beats large willpower.
- Tolerate boredom on purpose. Let yourself stand in a line or wait for the kettle without reaching for input. Boredom is the doorway you've trained yourself to flee; sitting in it occasionally rebuilds the muscle.
- Give attention real rest. Genuinely restorative breaks — a walk, time outside, a window stare — replenish focus in a way that scrolling does not. Time in nature in particular seems to restore depleted attention.[2]

If focus problems are severe, lifelong, and pervasive across every area of your life — not just a phone-era drift but a pattern that's been there since childhood and genuinely derails things — that may point to something like ADHD, which is a real condition worth a professional evaluation rather than a self-discipline project. Most people's complaint isn't that. Most people's attention is simply out of practice. The encouraging part is what that implies: practice is also the way back.
